Professor or associate/assistant professor, atmospheric sciences [Finland]

Faculty of Science is founded on basic scientific research applied and complemented by the disciplines of geography and geology. Thanks to our solid research infrastructure and internationally distinguished researchers, our research is of a high standard. Among the Faculty’s strengths are also our wide-ranging study opportunities. We offer 8 bachelor’s programmes, 13 master’s programmes and 7 doctoral programmes. At the moment, we have 4,895 students.

The Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit based in physics, chemistry, meteorology, forest sciences, environmental sciences, and social sciences at the University of Helsinki. INAR aims to strengthen the internationally leading, integrated multidisciplinary research and education environment for atmospheric and Earth system science, and to provide scientific results for national and international environmental and climate policy. It performs multiscale research from molecular to global scales, and focuses on climate change, air quality, biogeochemical cycles, and ecosystem processes. INAR has INAR Finland Network partners at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, University of Eastern Finland and Tampere University.

The UH Faculty of Science is an equal opportunity workplace committed to advance wellbeing and diversity in science and education. We invite applications from qualified candidates irrespective of their cultural and linguistic background. We support the compatibility of work and family-life, promote gender equality in science, and have an active wellbeing group. We offer comprehensive preventive occupational health services and general medical care. In addition, all staff are covered by the University of Helsinki’s employee travel insurance and occupational accident insurance. Finland is a very family-friendly country with generous parental leaves, very affordable state-subsidized daycare that is available for all children, as well as world-renowned free primary and secondary education and public healthcare. The Faculty of Science invites applications for the position of
PROFESSOR OR ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES,
particularly on critical zone and atmospheric processes (tenure track).

Critical zone is the Earth’s surface layer extending from the top of the vegetation canopy (including atmospheric boundary layer) down to the bottom of the groundwater. The research area of the open position is atmospheric processes in the critical zone. This includes biogeochemical and physical cycles – such as water, carbon, nitrogen and sulphur cycles – and the Earth surface - atmosphere interactions and feedbacks. Research activities are connected to research conducted at SMEAR stations (Stations for Measuring Earth Surface - Atmosphere Relations), particularly those in Hyytiälä (Boreal forest site, SMEAR II station) and/or in Tvärminne (coastal site, contributing to SMEAR network). The research is also connected to the European research infrastructure (ESFRI) activities, particularly to those related to the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS), the Aerosols, Clouds, and Trace gases Research Infrastructure (ACTRIS), and the integrated European Long-Term Ecosystem, Critical Zone & Socio-Ecological Research Infrastructure (eLTER RI). Teaching area includes above mentioned research topics, e.g., the intensive winter and autumn schools typically organized in Hyytiälä.

Our planet has several (environmental) grand challenges. The current environmental grand challenges (e.g. climate change, biodiversity loss and atmospheric pollution) require interdisciplinary research and cross-boundary collaboration. New recruitment is expected to form a research group that extends the research capabilities of existing professors at INAR, addressing current gaps in understanding atmospheric processes in the critical zone, and developing new tools to achieve the proper understanding of cycles, interactions, feedbacks, and processes.

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, a professor must hold a doctoral degree and have high-level academic qualifications and experience in heading scientific research. The professor must also be able to perform research-based teaching of high quality, supervise dissertations and theses, as well as provide evidence of international cooperation in the field. The professor will teach in one or more of the following programmes: Doctoral Programme in Atmospheric Sciences, Master’s Programme in Atmospheric Sciences, Bachelor’s Programme in Physical Sciences, Bachelor’s Programme in Science.

An assistant/associate professor must hold a doctoral degree and have demonstrated ability for independent scientific work as well as teaching skills required by the position. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to have competence and motivation for scientific career proven by scientific publications and other academic activities.

When assessing the qualifications of each candidate, attention will be paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value in the field or the position, teaching experience and pedagogical training, participation in doctoral education, the ability to produce teaching materials, and other teaching merits. If deemed necessary, teaching skills will be assessed through a demonstration lecture. Furthermore, attention will be paid to the applicant’s activities within the research community, success in obtaining research funding, research work abroad and elected positions in international organisations.

To be successful in the position, the candidate must have a proven capacity for scientific leadership, acquired research funding, project management and scientific writing.

The University will offer the appointee an attractive career opportunity in top-level research and research-based teaching, possibilities for international collaboration, and for the appointed assistant/associate professor prerequisites to grow into full professorship. In addition to the funding possibilities offered by the national funding agencies, the Faculty of Science opens calls on a yearly basis for infrastructure funding. The selected person will also get a startup package of about 160 000 EUR.

Annual gross salary for an assistant/associate professor amounts to 50,000 - 68,500 euros and for full professor to 64,000 - 96,000 euros.

Applications must have the following enclosures as a one single pdf file (in English):
  • an academic portfolio
  • containing a summary of supervision duties of master’s and doctoral theses and a presentation on how the applicant plans to develop her/his field and its teaching;
  • a list of those publications and other relevant documents on competence and merits that the applicant wishes to be taken into account in the selection process.

On the Faculty’s request, short-listed applicants should prepare to submit up to 10 publications of their choice to be sent to assessors after the application period. The publications shall be submitted the University of Helsinki Recruitment System upon request of the Faculty.

Please submit your application using the University of Helsinki Recruitment System via Apply now button. Applicants who are employees of the University of Helsinki are requested to leave their application via SAP Fiori.

The deadline for applications is 15.9.2023.
